Hey everyone, Yan here,

Today we will have a detailed look at
Shopify Markets, which has made selling
internationally much easier in recent
years. Specifically, we will go over
what Shopify Markets is and the problem
it solves. And then we will explore the
different features like handling
currencies, product prices, multi-
language, localizing content for
different places. And this is going to
save you a few hours of debugging and
also a few things to pay attention to in
context of SEO. So, it should be a lot
of fun. and let's get started right
away. All right. So, when brands say
they want to sell international, it can
imply several things. So, some just want
to translate their website content to
different languages, which is the
easiest. Then some want to display
product prices in different currencies.
Some also want to change their product
prices to adjust for different
purchasing power can mean offering local
payment methods or adjusting website
content because different countries
resonate with different designs, for
example. And then we haven't even
touched on regulations and tax
implications and so forth. Now,
historically, all these things were
quite hard to manage from just a single
Shopify store. So, brands used to create
multiple Shopify stores, pretty much one
for each country they were selling to
because that gave them the highest level
of control. But that also came with
several downsides because now you have
to pay multiple Shopify subscriptions.
You might have to pay for the same apps
twice or three times depending on how
many stores you have. Then you have to
sync the data between the stores like
sync all the products and inventory like
stock stock information and also if you
make changes to a theme let's say code
changes you have to deploy them to five
stores or whatever. So it really becomes
harder to manage and comes with a lot of
overhead. Now in order to solve this
problem Shopify introduced Shopify
markets which aims to let you manage all
these things from just a single store.
Okay. Okay, so now that we have a rough
understanding of what Shopify market is,
let's explore the most important
features and how to set everything up.
Here I'm in one of my development stores
and you can find markets in the left
side menu. If the UI changed for some
reason, you can also just use the search
bar. That's usually the easiest. And if
you haven't set up anything yet, then
you should only see one market, the
primary market, which is the market that
this store was created for, United
States in this in this case here. And on
the front end, you can also see that we
neither have a currency selector here
nor a language selector or anything. So,
we're only selling to one market right
now. And this is also reflected in the
checkout area because people can only
select the United States here for
delivery addresses. And people from
other countries or other places can't
even complete their order. Okay. Now, if
you want to expand to new markets,
naturally, you would click on create
market right here. And then we have to
select the countries that make up this
new market. This can either be a single
country, for example, I could just
select Germany here. And selecting
single countries would give you the
highest level of control because then
you can adjust all the settings on a per
country basis. You can also group
multiple countries though. For example,
I could group Germanspeaking countries
and create a market for Germany and
Austria for instance. Or I could also
group the entire European Union if I
want and then select all the countries
within Europe if you want that as a as a
meaningful market. So here it depends a
little bit on what you want
specifically. But for now let's just go
with one country so that we have the
highest level of control. So Germany is
selected right now. The name was also
autogenerated Germany in this case just
descriptive. And you can also see that
the currency was also set to euro
automatically which I think makes sense.
You can also cancel this out if you
don't want currency conversion. But
yeah, usually it leads to higher
conversions and makes it more convenient
for the customers to purchase products.
If you want, you can also define
rounding settings because for example,
if let's say one USD is 0.86, you might
want to round prices. Uh but I would
leave everything on default here and
then save everything as is.
And after the next refresh, I should
also see a currency selector on my front
end. And yeah, now I'm able to convert
all prices to euro if I wish. And here
are two things to pay attention to. If
your theme doesn't display a currency
selector, you might first have to enable
it in the theme settings. So then I
would just go to the customizer and on
dawn. This is within the header
settings, I believe. Heading header and
then yeah, utilities, country and region
select. We can enable or disable that if
we want. And yeah, I just want to leave
it on. And the second thing is you can
also automatically select the right
currency for your customers which makes
it more convenient for them. And in
order to do that you have to go to the
online store preferences. So I would
just search that really quick. Ref
online store preferences.
And then down here under automatic
redirection you want to enable the
country region redirect. So this is
based on the visitor's location, geoip
if you want, and then it would
automatically select euro for me. But in
order to properly test this, you might
want to use an incognito window because
once you've visited the store once, it
sets a small cookie and then your choice
remains. But if I use a fresh browser
window now, it should automatically be
euro for me because I'm based in Germany
and have a German IP right now. Okay, so
far so good. But here's another thing to
pay attention to. Customers from Germany
are still not able to complete the
checkout yet because although we've set
up Germany as a new market, we don't
have any shipping zones or shipping
rules configured. And you can also see
this right here. If you click into the
market,
you would see that there's no shipping
configured for Germany yet. So, I would
follow this link and this get and this
gets you to the default shipping and
delivery settings. Then you can click
into the shipping profile. And on this
page, you should find your current
shipping settings. For example, here we
have the US warehouse. And then one of
the shipping zones is North America. And
I want to add a new shipping zone right
here for our new market, Germany. So now
Germany shows up here. And then we also
need to add a rate or different like
shipping methods if you want. So here we
just use express international shipping.
Let's just put that at 10 bucks.
Whatever. And I won't get into this
rabbit hole of shipping and delivery
settings now because there's like so
much you can do like with multiple
locations or local pickup or what
happens if you have split orders where
one product is only available in like
one warehouse and not the other and like
you can go deep with this. And if you
need help setting this up then yeah just
feel free to reach out. For the sake of
simplicity let's just imagine one
warehouse and then multiple shipping
zones with different methods. So,
Express within the United States,
Express International to Germany, and
then let's save this.
And now that we also have a way of
shipping products to Germany, customers
can select Germany within the checkout
and complete their order. Awesome. All
right. So, now we've set up our new
market to the point where we selected
the countries or country in this case.
We added a new currency plus automatic
redirection based on the location, IP
address essentially. And we also have
shipping profiles. so that people can
complete the checkout. Now we can have a
look at domain and language settings and
these kind of belong together because
you could also have different domains
for all the different languages and this
would also be the cleanest setup because
if you have a domain for let's say
English-sp speakaking countries and then
one for Germany and one for France all
these domains would also independently
rank in search engines on Google for
example. And if we only have one domain
and then all languages under this one,
it would only show the default content
in its default language. On my
development store, I only have one
domain. So if we click on
domain/language right here, it would
only show me the one that's available.
And currently, maybe we just give it an
intermediate save right here. And then
inside the menu, you can see that
currently I only have English set up. So
let's go ahead and add another language.
So, if we click this little plus icon
here, it immediately gets us to the
language settings of our store. You
could also find this via the search bar
if you want. And right now, we only have
English as a default language. So, let's
go ahead and add a new one. And in my
case, I want to add German. Then, we
also have to select the domain that this
language will be available under. So,
I'll select the primary one. Done. So,
now the new language was added right
here. But it also says that we don't
have any translations set up yet. And we
have to take care of three different
levels. So number one would be theme
elements like elements coded into your
theme. This would be buttons for example
or if we visit one of the product pages,
the add toart button here reads add to
cart. Or if we go to the cart page, then
here it reads your cart or checkout. So
all these elements need to be translated
and usually or like 99% of the times
this is already built into the theme
like the most common languages at least.
So this should work out of the box. Then
we have all sorts of data that was added
via the Shopify admin dashboard. So this
would be product descriptions for
example because those are added via the
product editor and don't have anything
to do with the theme code or anything.
Yeah. So these these are kind of
separate and the same is true for pages,
blog articles, collections. So all the
content that's maintained via the
Shopify admin. And then lastly, we have
to take care of section content. So this
is everything that we've set up via the
customizer. For example, if we take a
look at the homepage, we have this big
image banner. And this content here
lives in the section settings. So these
need to be translated as well. Also, one
important side note, when we get to
translating section content, it's not
just limited to text because we will
also be able to translate images. Yeah.
So, basically put another image for a
different language. And I would also
recommend doing it this way. Yeah. So,
if you want to replace images for
certain languages or certain countries,
then I would do that within the
translations. And I'll show you why in a
second. But yeah, let's first see how
that's done. The first thing we need to
do in order to do this is install the
Shopify translate and adapt app which is
free. So we can just find this on the
app store and then click install. And
once the app is installed we can come
back to our languages and then select
the the new language German right here.
And then under translate we should find
the app right here. Then it opens the
app with the language selected. And this
shows everything that we talked about.
So we have product data, online store
data like blog posts and etc etc. And we
can also use this app to translate
different sections and to make our life
easier, we can even use the auto
translate feature. So it goes to like
some translation API. So yeah, for the
sake of simplicity, let's go with auto
translate.
Takes a couple minutes while it's going
through all the store data, etc. And in
the meantime, I can already show you how
you can translate specific sections. So,
if you're on the front end and have a
specific section right here within the
theme settings or within the section
settings, you should find these three
dots right here. And then you can choose
localize. So, localize this first
section here, this image banner section.
And that would also bring up the app in
context of this section. And here we now
find all the content. For example, this
was the headline. Try the world's
aromas. translated to German. Shop all
translated to German. As a native
speaker, I can tell you that this
translation is not perfect. So here you
would want to double check and like
review everything. Maybe I could come up
with like something that sounds more
catchy or yeah, just sounds better
overall. I would need to spend some
thought on this as well. But yeah, point
being you can translate text content and
images as well. Yeah. So this is the
main banner image. Right now we have
this barista here like crafting a nice
cappuccino. And if you want to replace
this image for a different market, you
can do so right here and also translate
the images. So for the sake of this
video, I generated a new image where a
guy pours like a cappuccino into a beer
glass so that it resonates more with the
German market. And then we can save this
as well. Okay, now with this in place
and with everything set up, we can come
back to our languages. And now we can
publish German as a new language. So I
would go on these three dots here and
then publish.
Okay, seems this was successful. Both
languages are published. And here it
also suggests that we go back to
markets. We've already linked German,
the German market with this language.
But yeah, let's just double check that
to make sure. So go to markets. Here's
our new market.
And then for Germany, we have two
languages available. English and now
also German. Awesome.
The next time we refresh the front end,
we should now also find a language
selector. Yeah, previously we just had
the currency selector. Now we also have
a language selector. And if I switch
this to German, then we should see the
different image. Awesome. And also all
the content is translated, theme content
as well as product data because this was
now automatically translated with the
with the translate and adapt app. And
also all the theme elements now show
yeah German German text pretty much.
Okay. So far so good. Now we can change
the currency. We can change the
language. Awesome. And similarly to how
we had an automatic redirect for the
currency. We can set up something for
the language as well. So let me show you
that really quick. If you come back to
online store preferences, you can just
search that search that in the search
bar or here under online store
preferences. We can come back to the
section where it reads automatic
redirection where we already enabled the
country redirect. We can also enable the
automatic language redirect. And here
it's important to note that the currency
is always changed based on the location.
So IP address and the language is based
on the system settings. So my browser in
that case or the user's computer if you
want. So the language that the that the
user is currently using. And yeah, while
testing this drove me crazy because I
thought it was both both based on IP and
then things didn't work and uh it was
just a mess. And I mean they also state
this right here like this matches the
visitor's browser. Uh but but who reads
the fine print, right? So yeah, just
know this is based on IP address and
language is based on browser settings.
But yeah, these are the most important
things to know when it comes to
translating content. Now, there's one
last addition to this in case you want
to completely change the layout and the
design because, for example, a website
in Japan might look totally different
from one in the United States. And in
that case, you can just bring up the
customizer, the theme customizer, and
then in the top top bar menu, you can
select the different markets. So,
Germany for example. And let's just say
for the sake of this demo here, we want
to hide the blog posts and we want want
to hide the coffee of the month section.
Then I could just go into the customizer
here and then hide both. So now we only
have the first two sections. And
likewise, I could also go in here and
tweak like any other setting. It's like
a completely different set of settings
for the German market now. And then
let's save that.
And if I refresh the front end one more
time, like from my German computer with
my German IP address, I should now only
see the first two sections. Awesome.
Noteworthy. I can still use the
translations here. So I could switch
back to English. And this would also
change the image. It would change all
the text and whatnot. But it's it still
shows me the layout for the German
market. And this is really important.
And this is also why I said you have to
separate like content translations or I
would I would recommend separating
content translations with the translate
and adapt app and then layout
translations or design changes you can
do via the customizer with native
Shopify markets. But I wouldn't mix the
two because otherwise it gets very
confusing if you have let's say some
translations in like translate and adapt
and maybe you translated like the
headlines in Shopify markets native
customizer thing here and then it's like
you never know where the translations
live. Yeah. So my rule of thumb would be
translate all the content with the
translate and adapt app and make design
changes and layout changes using the
customizer just to stay organized. Okay.
Okay, and that's pretty much all there
is to say about domain and language
settings and design changes that we just
discussed. Okay, what else is there in
Shopify markets? You can also create
different product cataloges if let's say
certain products are only available in
certain markets or if you want to adjust
the product prices. This is pretty
self-explanatory. So, you just have to
create a new catalog.
The name could be whatever. In this
case, the catalog for the German market.
And just one thing to note, you first
have to save this before you can remove
or add new products. So I'll save this
once. And now I can go ahead and exclude
and include certain products. So let's
say the Colombian and Ethopian coffee
weren't available in Germany. Then I
would just select these and exclude
them. Um, in the store I also have tons
of like draft and demo products. So
don't worry about that. And yeah, if you
want to adjust for purchasing power or
economic strength, then you can do that
right here in the pricing settings. So,
for example, you could override all
prices and decrease them by 10% or
whatever you want. Or you could also
override them like specifically and just
enter a number here for a specific
product. But yeah, I think this is
self-explanatory. So, we can save this
as is. And then lastly, one of the last
settings that we have here in Shopify
markets are taxes and duties. Also very
important at the same time at the same
time quite complex. I mean just the tax
laws in Germany are quite complex and
yeah this is an international channel.
So this depends like so much on where
you're based, where you sell to, what
kind of products you sell. And my
recommendation especially for tax rates
is to always consult like with a legal
expert or tax consultant because they
can tell you exactly how much you need
to charge in which country. Shopify also
has some automations in place to make
your life a lot easier which are good
but yeah as I said I would I would
always recommend checking back with a
legal expert because I can't provide
legal advice here. Um yeah just so Joe
just as a small disclaimer. Okay, then
yeah, sales tax. You can set them up
right here. Depending on your rates, you
can decide whether you want duties and
import taxes also depends. I mean, check
this check this back with your tax
consultant. I can't I can't emphasize
this enough. And then, yeah, you can
also decide how you want to display
product prices. In certain countries,
it's common that you display prices
including taxes. In other places, it's
recommended or common that you display
them excluding prices. Or you can just
leave it on dynamic. then Shopify
figures this out based on like what's
common in the country the visitor is
browsing from. And maybe one last piece
of advice here, if you have Shopify
functions running that somehow influence
product prices, let's say, let's just
say you had a function that gives like
10% on every product, then you might
want to double check if this interferes
with how the prices are displayed, like
whether the texts are included or not.
We did have clients where it made a
difference in the past. So yeah, just
something to be aware of or to have on
your radar. So yeah, and I think I cut
