So you're getting traffic. People are
landing on your store, but the sales
just aren't coming in and you have no
idea why. Here's the thing. Your Shopify
store is already tracking everything you
need to figure out what's wrong. The
data is sitting right there in your
dashboard. Most store owners just don't
know how to read it, so they guess. They
change their product photos, rewrite
their copy, run a discount, and still
nothing. All because they skipped the
one step that would have told them
exactly where the problem was. What's
going on everyone? My name is Eric
Hunsaker and here on this channel we cut
through the fluff to help you build
smarter Shopify stores and grow your
e-commerce business. Today we're going
through your Shopify analytics, what
each number actually means and what to
do when something looks off. By the end
of this video you'll know exactly which
metrics matter, how to find them, and
how to use them to make real decisions
about your store. Let's get into it. Why
analytics actually matter? Most
beginners treat analytics like a report
card, something you check to see if
things are going well or not. That's not
the right way to think about it.
Analytics are a diagnostic tool. They
tell you where customers are dropping
off, where they're engaging, and what's
working well enough to double down on.
When you skip your analytics, you're
flying blind. You might spend money on
ads and not realize the traffic is
landing on a page with a 0.4%
conversion rate. You might never notice
that one product is getting nearly 30
times more views than everything else
combined. The numbers tell the story.
Your job is to learn how to read them.
Where to find your analytics in Shopify.
So from your Shopify admin go ahead and
click analytics in the left sidebar.
You'll land on the overview dashboard.
This is your main snapshot and it pulls
real-time data that refreshes
automatically while you're looking at
it. So from your Shopify admin dashboard
we'll click on analytics over here on
the left-hand side to get to the
overview page. So the overview dashboard
shows you the big metrics at a glance.
You can customize which metric cards
appear here, move them around, resize
them, and focus on what matters most to
you. Below that, you've got access to
the full reports library, which breaks
down into categories like acquisition,
behavior, sales, customers, and more.
These are your deep-level reports when
you need to dig into something specific.
One important thing to know, Shopify
Analytics is available on all plans, but
some of the more advanced reports, like
profit margin breakdowns and more
detailed customer reports, are only
available on the Shopify plan and above.
The basics we're covering today are
available to everyone. And the five
metrics that actually matter, let's
break it down here. There are five
numbers you need to watch consistently
if you want to understand what's
happening in your store. First is total
sales, and this one's pretty
straightforward. It's the revenue your
store has brought in over whatever time
period you're looking at. You can adjust
your date range in the top right corner
of the dashboard. Always compare it to
the previous period, so you know if
things are going up or down, not just
what the number it is. The second metric
is sessions. So, a session is one
browsing visit to your store. If the
same person visits three times in a day,
that counts as three sessions. Sessions
tell you how much traffic you're
getting. And when you pair that with
your sales number, you start to see your
conversion picture pretty quickly.
Getting 1,000 sessions with zero sales
is a completely different problem than
getting 10 sessions with zero sales. The
third is conversion rate. This is
probably the most important number in
your entire store. It measures what
percentage of your sessions actually
turn into a purchase. So, a good Shopify
conversion rate sits somewhere around
2.5 to 3.5%
and plenty of stores run a bit below
that without anything being broken. But,
if you're down under 1% with steady
traffic coming in, something on your
site is getting in the way of the sale.
We'll get into what that usually means
in a minute. Now, the fourth metric is
average order value, which you'll see
shortened to AOV. This is the average
dollar amount of each order. If your AOV
is low, customers are buying, but
they're not buying much. That's a
problem you can solve with upsells,
product bundles, or free shipping
thresholds. The fifth metric is traffic
sources. This one lives under the
acquisition report. It tells you where
your visitors are coming from, whether
that's direct traffic, search, social
media, email, or paid ads. Knowing where
your traffic comes from tells you where
to put your energy and your budget. What
a low conversion rate is actually
telling you. If your conversion rate is
below 1%, something is breaking the
trust or the desire before customers hit
that buy button. Let's think through the
most common reasons. A low conversion
rate with decent traffic usually means
one of three things. Either your
products' pages aren't doing their job,
your store doesn't look trustworthy, or
the price or shipping expectations are
stopping people at checkout. Product
page problems are the most common. If
your images are low quality, your
descriptions are thin, there's no social
proof like reviews or ratings, customers
won't feel confident enough to buy. But,
that's a fixable problem. Trust issues
often come up for newer stores. If
there's no about page, no clear return
policy, and no visible contact
information, people get nervous. Fix the
basics and watch your conversion rate
respond. Shipping cost surprises are a
big one, too. If someone adds the
product to their cart and then sees a
high shipping cost at checkout, they
typically bail. So, check your checkout
abandonment in the behavior section of
your reports to confirm this is
happening. What a low average order
value is telling you. So, if people are
buying, but your AOV is lower than you'd
like, the fix is usually about what
you're offering around the primary
product. A customer bought something.
That means they already trust you.
That's the hardest part. Now is the time
to offer them something related. Product
bundles, quantity discounts, and order
minimums for free shipping all push AOV
up. A simple "You qualify for free
shipping at $50 banner in the cart" does
more than most people expect. Check your
top products report in Shopify to see
what's selling most. Then ask yourself
what naturally goes with that product.
That's your upsell or bundle
opportunity. Using traffic source data
to focus your marketing. So a lot of
store owners spread themselves thin
trying to be everywhere at once. They're
posting on Instagram, running Google
Ads, doing TikTok, and sending emails.
All at the same time with no idea what's
actually bringing people in. Your
acquisition report solves this. When you
look at traffic sources, you'll see
which channel is sending the most
sessions and more importantly, which
channel is sending sessions that
actually convert. Here's the thing. A
channel that sends you 500 sessions with
a 4% conversion rate is worth 10 times
more than one sending 2,000 sessions at
0.5%.
Volume isn't the goal. Qualified traffic
is. Once you know which source is
working, you double down there. Cut back
on what isn't performing or test it
differently, but stop treating all
channels equally when the data is
telling you otherwise. Live view. Your
real-time window. So there's one more
feature worth knowing about. Live view.
You'll find it in your analytics
section. It shows you a real-time map of
where your visitors are. How many people
are on your site right now, what they're
viewing, and how many are in the
checkout process. Live view isn't a
metric you track over time. It's a
diagnostic tool you use in specific
moments. When you're running a sale or
launching a new product and you want to
see how traffic is responding in real
time, this is where you go. If you're
running an ad and you want to know if
traffic is landing where you intended,
pull up live view and watch. It's also
useful for spotting sudden drops. If
you're running ads and live view shows
active sessions but no checkouts at all,
that's a signal that something on your
product or checkout page may be broken.
Putting it all together. Here's how to
make this practical. Set a weekly habit
of checking these five metrics. Total
sales, sessions, conversion rate, AOV,
and traffic sources. You don't need to
spend an hour on it. 15 minutes is
enough to start to spot patterns. If
your sessions are growing, but sales
aren't, look at conversion rate and
narrow down where the drop-off is
happening. If sales are consistent, but
not growing, look at AOV and traffic
source diversification. If one traffic
source is outperforming everything else,
focus more budget and effort there. The
goal is to make one decision per week
based on your data, not based on a gut
feeling or what someone else said worked
for them. Your store's numbers are
specific to your store, so trust them.
Now, if you don't have a Shopify store
